Losing a significant amount of weight isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Unfortunately, weight loss can sometimes result in exercise and diet-resistance pockets of fat around your body. It can be disheartening to put in so much work only to be less than satisfied with the results. Fortunately, through body sculpting, it’s possible to attain the contours and physique you’ve always wanted. To find out more, contact Nowak Aesthetics in Chula Vista, CA to discuss your options with a medical professional.
What Is Body Sculpting?
Body sculpting, also known as body shaping or body contouring, is the process of reshaping your body contours by removing stubborn deposits of fat beneath the skin. These fatty deposits are often left over after you lose significant weight and can be exceedingly difficult (if not impossible) to address yourself.
What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved treatment that is effective at reducing the volume of fat cells beneath your skin in specific, targeted areas. It does so by freezing fat cells, causing them to crystalize and die off. Once the fat cells are dead, your body will naturally process and dispose of them through urine, resulting in the treated area looking sculpted and smooth.
Why Is CoolSculpting Effective When Diet and Exercise Aren’t?
The reason you’re having trouble achieving the body contour you desire by yourself is probably due to the type of fat you’re trying to lose. The type of fat that you lose when you engage in dieting and exercising is visceral fat–fat that sits deep within your tissues. Unfortunately, you also have fat that sits just beneath your skin, known as subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat isn’t lost as easily or quickly as visceral fat.
While subcutaneous fat doesn’t respond as well to diet and exercise, it responds exceedingly well to CoolSculpting treatments. If you’re frustrated with your lack of body sculpting progress in the gym, CoolSculpting can help make a huge difference in your appearance.
What Is a Typical CoolSculpting Treatment Like?
There are a few different options if you want to get rid of unwanted fat deposits. What sets CoolSculpting apart is the fact that it’s entirely non-invasive. The treatment is performed in the office and does not require any poking, prodding, or incisions. If the invasiveness of the procedures available has deterred you getting from the body you want, then you might want to look into CoolSculpting.
A paddle-shaped applicator will be fit around the skin of your desired treatment area and uses gentle suction to align the underlying fatty tissues with the paddles. The paddles then work to cool your skin down to a temperature where fat cells freeze but the surrounding tissue does not. Once the fat cells freeze, they will begin to die off.
How Is That Possible?
This treatment works because it cools your skin at a constant rate. Subcutaneous fat cells freeze at much higher temperatures than your surrounding tissues, so the fatty tissue caught between the paddles will freeze before your skin gets anywhere near the temperature required to do so. You’ll experience a cooling sensation in the area, but it isn’t painful or even uncomfortable.
Once your subcutaneous fat cells reach their freezing point, they will slowly start to crystalize and die. Your fat cells will not all go through this process at the same time, and cell death generally begins a few days after treatment and continues on for a few months.
Who Is a Candidate for Body Sculpting?
To better understand whether you’re an ideal candidate for CoolSculpting, ask yourself the following questions.
Are You at or Near Your Ideal Weight?
Undergoing treatment will reduce the total amount of fat on your body, though it is not intended to be a weight loss option itself. If you’re at or near your ideal weight, you’re probably a good candidate for treatment. However, if you’re hoping to lose another twenty or thirty pounds, you may be advised to lose that weight first and then come in for treatment.
Are You Considering Pregnancy?
It’s generally not advisable to undergo treatment while you are pregnant. Additionally, if you have plans of getting pregnant in the near future, you may want to consider having a child first. The reason for this is that pregnancy will cause you to put on additional weight, thereby compromising your results. If childbirth is something that’s in your future, but not for several years yet, CoolSculpting may be an option.
Are You In Good General Health?
With a non-invasive treatment like CoolSculpting, it’s important that you’re in good general health. It is only recommended for individuals who are in good overall health. If you have any skin conditions or other health issues, make sure you notify Dr. Nowak at your consultation. Pre-existing conditions do not necessarily disqualify you from treatment, but it’s important that you let Dr. Nowak know about your complete medical history.
Additional Benefits of CoolSculpting
As mentioned, there are a few different approaches to this treatment that you can choose from. Below are just a few of the many benefits to choosing CoolSculpting.
All of our bodies are different, and none of us store fat in the exact same ways or places as others. Some people accrue excess fat around their bellies and flanks (love handles), while others may notice a significant amount of exercise-resistant fat in their upper arms, thighs, or knees. Typical weight loss efforts cause you to burn fat all over your body and are unable to focus on a singular problem area.
It was to address this issue that CoolSculpting was designed. The applicator paddles can be placed virtually anywhere you’re looking to improve. With CoolSculpting, you can achieve localized fat reduction through non-invasive treatment that you cannot match with diet and exercise alone.
When you choose more invasive methods for body sculpting, they tend to require more from your provider than non-invasive treatments. With surgeries, you’ll need medication, anesthesia (and an anesthesiologist), possible overnight stays, and a longer road to recovery.
For example, liposuction offers similar benefits when it comes to the targeted removal of unwanted fat. However, liposuction is not pain-free and is an invasive procedure, meaning that it generally costs more money and time invested to achieve similar results.
For some people, the idea of undergoing surgery of any kind is frightening. That fear is often enough to deter a prospective patient entirely from undergoing treatment to achieve their desired cosmetic results.
CoolSculpting is much less complicated than surgery and therefore involves far fewer risks. Due to its non-invasive nature, the treatment lacks all the potential side effects or complications that surgery can bring with it. No anesthesia is necessary, and the surface of your skin is not punctured or incised, so no bleeding can occur.
Sometimes, certain procedures or treatments gain popularity because they’re new and exciting. Other times, they get popular because they work. With CoolSculpting, it’s both. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) hasn’t been around too terribly long, as it was only approved by the FDA in 2010. The trials that the treatment went through to gain approval provided superb results. As word got around, more and more people tried it out for themselves and were able to discover that the treatment’s popularity wasn’t just hype–it works.
What comes to mind when you think of body sculpting? If it’s spending long hours under anesthesia and many months of recovery, think again. Whichever area you’re looking to address, the treatment typically takes only an hour or less from start to finish. However, an added benefit of choosing Nowak Aesthetics is that we have two cryolipolysis machines, meaning you can effectively treat two areas at once, further reducing the amount of time it will take to target each area of concern.
Aside from the treatment speed, recovery speed is also fast. There’s virtually no downtime required when you choose to undergo CoolSculpting treatments. Once your treatment is complete, you are free to leave the office and complete any other tasks or activities you have before you that day.
It Leaves No Scars
More invasive body sculpting procedures often result in scars (although they are typically light and well-hidden). Scars are an unavoidable side effect of surgery, and surgeons are well-trained in techniques to ensure they’re masterfully hidden, but they’ll still be there.
Not so with CoolSculpting. Since no incisions are necessary and your skin isn’t damaged at all, there’s no need to fear residual marks or scarring after undergoing treatment. If discretion is important to you, rest assured that nobody will be able to tell you’ve had CoolSculpting done unless you tell them yourself.
In 2010, the initial results of the clinical trials surrounding CoolSculpting yielded fantastic results on the areas of the body in which FDA approval was sought. Since then, additional treatment areas have been approved, and others are currently in the process of approval. The additional areas that have been approved include the abdomen, thighs, under the chin, love handles, back, bra bulge, upper arms, and under the buttocks.
These areas are also well-known for accruing exercise-resistant fat. As cryolipolysis continues to succeed in eliminating unwanted fat, additional areas are probably going to be approved.
This benefit goes back to the fact that fat freezes at higher temperatures than the surrounding tissues. Since the treatment doesn’t include temperatures that are damaging to your tissues, there’s nothing to stimulate the pain response in your body, making treatment virtually pain-free.
Maximizing Your Results
Body sculpting is intended to help you achieve the body you want by eliminating diet and exercise-resistant fat from specific places around your body. While you will lose weight during treatment as fat cells are frozen, crystallized, and then removed from your body, treatment isn’t intended to be your primary vehicle for weight loss.
In order to achieve the results you want, it’s important to pay attention to where you’re starting from. Those who have the most satisfaction from their results are patients who are able to maintain a stable body weight before they undergo body sculpting. It’s extremely important that you continue to follow a healthy lifestyle after treatment to maintain your new body contours.
Be Mindful of Your Diet
If you counted calories and kept strict control of what you were eating while trying to lose weight, you will want to maintain that level of discipline afterward. Granted, you probably won’t need to restrict your calories as much since you’re no longer trying to lose weight. However, you will want to keep an eye on your daily caloric intake and weigh yourself periodically to ensure you’re not putting on any significant weight.
If you have questions about how you should eat post-treatment, make sure Dr. Nowak is aware of your concerns. He can make suggestions regarding how to eat or, if you prefer, provide you with information regarding nutritionists and dieticians who can help you maintain your new, ideal weight.
Don’t Stop Exercising
Regardless of what your weight loss goals are, daily exercise is essential to living a healthy, happy lifestyle. That being said, to maintain your results you should engage in moderate-to-vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, four or five times a week.
Much like with your diet, if you engaged in physical activity to lose weight, you won’t necessarily have to work out as hard to maintain your current weight provided you continue to eat well.
