Many patients in San Diego deal with the chronic pain caused by spider veins and varicosities. But only a few know that we now actually have a many treatment options available to remove these. Aside from vein removal surgery and laser therapy, leg veins can be removed through sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy is a vein removal treatment that works best for small to medium sized veins. This procedure involves injecting a sclerosing substance into vein that will result to the inflammation of the vein causing it to close up and form a scar tissue. Once the scar tissue is formed, the vein is no longer able to let blood flow so the circulation of blood is directed to healthy veins.
Many of my patients in San Diego prefer this method over surgical removal of leg veins simply because it is less invasive compared to the latter. Although the success rate of surgery is high, there are still some who are not willing to go under the knife because of the risk of infection and possible scarring of the treatment area. Sclerotherapy is definitely less invasive and will also do its job in removing the unsightly varicosities and spider veins.
Sclerotherapy also has very minimal downtime compared to surgery. Each procedure wold take about 30 minutes to complete depending on how many veins you need treatment for and patients can resume their daily activities right after each procedure. The entire procedure is relatively painless and patients only reported a slight burning sensation during the injection of the sclerosing substance, but after that there’s no need to stay at home and wait for any wounds to heal because incisions will not be made.
Although surgical vein removal is a time tested procedure, it can be quite expensive if you are only targeting small to medium spider veins and varicosities. You can get your money’s worth for surgery if you choose this treatment option for larger varicose veins. But if you are just suffering from a less serious case of varicosities and spider veins, it will be more economical if you have opt to have a sclerotherapy done instead. The success rate of sclerotherapy in treating small to medium sized enlarged veins is very high and the possibility of the reactivation of treated veins are close to none so patients generally need only one treatment to achieve the desired results so you also shouldn’t have to worry about the cost of re-treatment.
